James McNeill Whistler

(1834-1903)

"Battersea Dawn (Cadogan Pier)," circa 1863

Etching and drypoint in black ink on light-golden, thin, laid, Japan paper
From the combined total of 61 known impressions in two states; second (final) state
With the artist's signature showing faintly in the lower left plate corner: Whistler
Plate: 4.5" H x 6" W; Sheet: 6.25" H x 8.625" W

  • Literature:
    Glasgow 95 ii/ii; Kennedy 75;
  • Notes:
    This image is from Whistler's "A Series of Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on the Thames" (aka the "Thames Set"), published in 1871.
  • Condition: Overall generally good appearance. A good impression of this state, the delicate drypoint lines in the sky just starting to show some wear in the upper left quadrant of the plate, on a sheet with wide margins. An approximately pea-sized loss to the tip of the upper left margin corner, "made-up" via a linen hinge, as well as a smaller, approximately rice-sized thinned area at the center of the upper margin edge, backed with what was likely an earlier glassine-type hinge. Various old collector and dealer notations in pencil along the lower margin edge. A small accumulation of old, as well as the current, paper and linen tapes hinging the sheet to the backboard from the verso of the upper margin corners.

    Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
