(1876-1950)

"Fujiyama -- First Light of the Sun," from the "Ten Views of Mount Fuji" series, 1926

Woodcut in colors on Japanese paper laid to tissue-thin Japanese paper
From the edition of unknown size, printed by the artist
Signed and titled in pencil in the lower margin: Hiroshi Yoshida; signed again "Yoshida" in black ink,
and "Hiroshi" with the artist's red ink seal, both in the lower left corner of the image; with Japanese
characters stamped in black ink in the left margin, along with the artist's jizuri ("self
printed") seal printed in red
Image: 21" H x 28" W; Sheet: 23.25" H x 30.25" W

  • Provenance:
Fujio Yoshida (1887-1987), wife of the artist
Acquired by the present owner from the above in the early 1970s
  • Literature:
    VMFA, Water and Shadow (2014), #II-7; Abe 1987, #048
  • Condition: Overall good condition. With margins. As mentioned, the sheet is backed with tissue-thin Japanese paper. Scattered foxing on the verso of the backing sheet, one of which shows through slightly to the recto of the printed sheet in the lower right portion of the mountain's outline. An unobtrusive, pinhead-sized accretion, seemingly attendant with the printing process, near the center of the left edge. Several diagonal creases in the upper right corner of the backing sheet do not affect the recto of the printed sheet. Pale backboard staining to the verso of the backing paper. The work is attached to the overmat in places with a combination of brown paper and clear tapes from the verso of the tissue-thin Japanese backing paper.

    Framed under glass: 30.5" H x 38" W x 1" D
