Hayley Lever N.A. (1875-1958 Mount Vernon, NY)

oil on canvasboard
10'' H x 14'' W

  • Provenance: Private Collection, San Joaquin County, CA
  • Notes: The Eads Bridge spans the Mississippi River connecting St. Louis, Missouri to East St. Louis, Illinois. When the Eads Bridge was completed in 1874, it was the longest arch bridge in the world, with an overall length of 6,442 feet. Notable in its construction was the exclusive use of cantilever support methods, the dramatic arch spans and the first use of steel as a primary building material on a bridge of this magnitude. A ''test elephant'' strolled across the bridge in June 1874 to prove that the bridge was safe, much to the delight of large crowds gathered. The bridge remains an iconic symbol of St. Louis and is still in use today for vehicular and pedestrian traffic as well as for the St. Louis MetroLink light rail line. In the present work and the following painting, Hayley Lever captures quintessential elements of the Mississippi River environment: the Eads Bridge and Steamboats
