Guy Orlando Rose (1867-1925 Pasadena, CA)

oil on canvas
15'' H x 18'' W

  • Provenance: The artist; Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Jessie Yarnell Kimball, Los Angeles, CA; Curtis Yarnell Kimball, Marian Kimball and Cecilia Wictor, Los Angeles, CA
  • Notes: The Rhode Island boat house, boats and surrounding gauzy, verdant landscape in the present work are painted in the mature, purely impressionistic style that Guy Rose developed during his nearly thirteen years abroad, including eight years in Giverny (W. South ''Guy Rose: American Impressionist'', Oakland, CA, 1995, p. 59). Rose filters sunlight across the sandy foreground path leading the eye toward the boat structures as overgrown trees lazily bend over the boathouse roof enabling the artist to introduce deep purple and blue tones in the darkest shadows. This tranquil vignette depicts a quiet corner of Narragansett Bay where Guy and Ethel Rose spent their first summers upon their return to America. In 1912, the couple left France and settled momentarily in New York where Rose continued to exhibit widely, including an important 1913 show at Macbeth Gallery. In the summers of 1913 and 1914, Rose taught an outdoor sketching class at Narragansett Pier in an area south of Wickford. The few documented identifiably Rhode Island subjects the artist produced during this brief period, including this painting, reveal Rose?s full commitment to and synthesis of French Impressionism presented in fresh American subject matter. Guy and Ethel Rose did not stay in New England for long and by fall 1914, the couple was on route to Southern California where they would remain permanently.
  • Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Artist's pinholes in the four corners. Craquelure throughout. Stretcher bar creases. A small circle of paint loss upper center. Blacklight: No evidence of restoration under blacklight.
