Gustave Baumann (1881-1971 Santa Fe, NM)

color woodcut on paper
image size: 12.25'' H x 13.25'' W

  • Provenance: Provenance: Estate, Los Angeles, CA
  • Literature: Literature: Acton, 103; J. Traugott, ''Gustave Baumann's Southwest'', New Mexico Museum of Art, 2007, p. 45, plate 20, illustrated
  • Notes: Note: Executed in the 1920s, one of the most important periods for Baumann's printwork, ''Hopi Katzinas'' is a rare and delightful example of the artist's work. David Acton writes of this woodcut, ''From his first years in New Mexico, Baumann was interested in traditional Pueblo and Hopi dolls and figurines, whose craftsmanship and childish delight combined with deep cultural significance in ways the artist found enchanting. He collected them avidly and became knowledgeable about their forms, decorations, and meanings. . . . 'Hopi Katzinas' suggests how extensive the artist's collection of dolls had become by about 1925, and how the artist delighted in their every detail. The composition is simple and uncluttered, so as not to detract from the dolls' splendid ornamentation. The technical complexity of this print is outstanding, with its myriad colors and intricate designs. This woodcut precisely reproduces the artist's oil painting, now at the Museum of New Mexico, which is titled on the canvas 'Pasatiempo'. Like the artists of Santa Fe who organized and celebrated the annual Pasatiempo fiesta, Baumann's Kachinas assemble for their own festival, circling around to watch the performance of a troupe of acrobats. The gathering dolls seem to come alive, interacting with each other, taking on human characteristics, and appearing to express their delight in the performance. A childlike tendancy to humanize these playthings is common in Baumann's prints of dolls and toys, and reflects something of the artist's character (D. Acton, ''Gustave Baumann Nearer to Art'', Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe, NM, 1993, pp. 64-65). Printed on the artist's German-made oatmeal-colored paper watermarked with the artist's heart-and-hand seal. Paper size: 14.25'' x 15.5''
  • Condition: Visual: Generally good condition with minor toning to sight area and some fading throughout. Slightly darker toning to margin edges formerly under a mat. A .5'' stable tear in center right margin not affecting printed area. Mounted to extremely thin, transparent archival rice paper backing. AS-IS. ALL SALES FINAL.
