George Hitchcock, N.A. (1850-1913 Providence, RI) Brittany girl on a flowered pathway s l-l: G. Hitchcock o-c 31.25 x 24.5 residence, South Orange Grove Ave., Pasadena, CA See artist's newspaper obituary dated August 1913 affixed verso: "George Hitchcock a famous American painter, who for thirty years has lived in Europe, died last Saturday on board his yacht, the Tulip, at Marken Island, near Amsterdam, where he spent his summers"..."he studied in London and later to Paris where he entered Julian's Academy and studied under Boulanger and Lefebvre. He gained a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1889 and was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in 1909 long after he had become a famous painter in Europe."
