  • Notes:
Ernst Van Leyden was a Dutch-born painter and sculptor whose cosmopolitan career took him from studies in Rotterdam, Brussels, Berlin and London to extended periods working in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, England, Egypt, the Middle East, and later the United States before finally settling near Paris. Initially associated with a vigorous, expressionist approach to portraiture, still life and landscape, his work was admired by critics such as Michel Ragon, who wrote that "Van Leyden's painting has a rare quality, which might seem unfashionable and somewhat shocking: it is beautiful… it is beautiful and joyful." His wide circle included artists and intellectuals such as Picasso, Dalí, Willem de Kooning, Chaplin and Stravinsky, reflecting the international context in which his art evolved.

From the late 1940s, Van Leyden turned decisively toward abstraction, creating his first abstract work in 1948 and, in the 1950s, developing ambitious mixed-media collages that explored "color, shapes and texture" through layered fabrics and painted surfaces. In these years, he produced large-scale collages and mixed-media works that have been compared to the idiom of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, using oil, paste and assembled materials to "reveal the secret of the materials he used." The present mixed media/collage belongs to this mature phase, in which Van Leyden's earlier expressionist sensibility is transformed into a lyrical abstraction: forms are distilled and recomposed, yet his characteristic warmth of color and dynamic composition remain central to the work's expressive power.
  • Condition: Overall good appearance. An occasional pale foxmark or surface stain scattered primarily in a few of the collaged pieces. Not examined out of the frame.

    Framed under glass: 102.25" H x 37.5" W x 6" D
