Two ''Finished Fetish'' structures: ''Ghanzon'' and ''Ardente'', the first: signed and dated on the wooden edge: Eric Johnson '91; the second: signed and dated on the upper wooden edge: Eric Johnson '90; each: signed again and titled verso; the first dated verso: 2/91; the second dated verso: 10/90, the first: carbon fiber on wood structure; the second: acrylic and lacquer on wood structure, the first: 30'' H x 30'' W x 8'' D, est: $400/600. Exhibited: Boritzer / Gray / Hamano Gallery, Santa Monica, CA, ''Eric Johnson New Sculpture'', February 28 - March 31, 1991, ''Ardente'' illustrated on the postcard. Note: Dimensions of the second: 24'' x 24'' x 11'' The high-sheen straight-edge and gently curved shapes of Eric Johnson's sculptures from the early 1990s, including the present pieces, harken back to the work of 1960s Los Angeles artists like John McCracken and Ken Price. Johnson continues this "finished fetish" style in his sculptures and utilizes various high shine surface materials and mediums including carbon fiber and lacquered and painted plywood mounted on finished wooden structures whose depth varies following the surface waves. The artist writes: "The simplicity of the work creates it's own power. The only difference in the diamond or square shaped works, other than scale and materials, is the randomly introduced wave pattern, which always produces a different outcome. All my work focuses on movement; hence, the wave patterns and the non-static introduction of reflective light" (Borizer/Gray/Hamano Gallery, Santa Monica, CA, "Eric Johnson ? New Sculpture", September ? October 1994, artist statement)..
