Edward Borein (1872-1945 Santa Barbara, CA), an original metal printing plate and book

  • Literature: Charles Eliott Perkins, ''The Pinto Horse'', Fischer & Skofield, Santa Barbara, CA, 1937, second edition, p. 20, illustrated
  • Notes: The 1937 second edition copy of Perkins' book ''The Pinto Horse'' features illustrations by Edward Borein throughout including a color frontispiece and numerous etchings. ''Five Crow Bucks'', illustrated on page 20, refers the story at the beginning of chapter four: ''One morning, as the horses were grazing near the mouth of the Cottonwood, where the stage road crosses a grassy bench, there passed up the road on the way from the reservation to the Billings Fair, five Crow bucks, mounted on their best ponies and decked out in the height of Indian gala dress. A hundred yards behind the bucks, jingled a battered hearse, driven by Two Leggings' oldest and most wrinkled wife; while lying down inside, two younger wives gazed through its glass sides on the passing scene. A proud man was Two Leggings, who had bought the hearse the year before from Ed Taintor, the Billings livery man, and proud were his three wives who thus were going to the Fair in style, while other squaws were left on the reservation.'' (C.E. Perkins, ''The Pinto Horse'', Santa Barbara, 1937, p. 17)
