Marilyn Monroe, 1955

Photograph on paper
Unsigned, probably printed later
Sight: 11.75" H x 17.75" W; Sheet: 15.875" H x 19.875" W

  • Notes:
This image shows Marilyn Monroe at the reception desk of Elizabeth Arden, Inc. in Manhattan. During the week of March 24-30, 1955, on assignment for "Redbook," photojournalist Ed Feingersh shot images of Marilyn, in available light, as she went about daily activities in New York City. The negatives were found in a warehouse decades after his death. They were reproduced in the book "Marilyn: Fifty-five" published by Bloomsbury Publishing, London, in 1990.
  • Condition: Overall good appearance. With margins. Two unobtrusive, very superficial, horizontal, surface scuffs visible primarily in raking light: one as an approximately 1.25" long line confined to the background between Marilyn's nose and the lilies (not affecting her face), and the other as a 0.75" long line (likely a continuation of the same superficial surface scuff) confined to background near photograph's right edge. The work is hinged to the overmat with three pieces of old white tape from the verso of the upper margin edge.

    Framed under glass: 28.5" H x 33.75" W x 2" D

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
