  • Provenance: Other notes:
In the latter part of the 19th century, Charles Amand-Durand played a key role in popularizing Paris' Bibliotheque Nationale's collection of prints by Old Master artists. After researching extensively, Amand-Durand was alarmed by the gradual deterioration of these works. Rather than relying on late impression or the worn copper plates themselves, Amand-Durand turned to early impressions (specifically, first and second states) as his models for creating faithful facsimiles. Through careful analysis and exceptional heliographic skill, Amand-Durand produced new copper plates that honored the clarity and depth of the originals. His work, particularly with images by Rembrandt and other major figures, reflects a lifelong commitment to preserving and popularizing graphic masterpieces by his predecessors.

Unlike impressions of this heliogravure which were printed in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, this example does not show Charles Amand-Durand's red ink stamp (Lugt 2934) on its verso. It is therefore likely that this impression was printed sometime after the heliogravured copper plates were acquired by D. Vincent et Cie publishers in Paris in 1978 (or his successors), since Lugt states that by that time, Charles Amand-Durand's red ink stamp was no longer being added to versos of the printed sheets.
