Two-day marine box chronometer with special patented balance
Dial: silvered dial, black Roman numeral hour markers, Arabic numeral sub-dial at 6 o'clock, 56-hour up/down indicator at 12 o'clock, blued steel spade hands, signed: Bliss & Creighton New York No. 1482
Movement: jeweled fusee and chain movement, No. 1482, 80mm, brass full plate, turned pillars, secured by screws, Earnshaw spring-detent escapement, Bliss's patented cut bimetallic compensation balance with wedged temperature adjustment weight and mean time adjustment tune, freesprung helical balance spring, marked with serial number to underside of top plate: 1482
Case: Mahogany hinged box with glazed top panel, flush fitted brass handles, circular plate with signiture, interior with glazed bezel, gimbaled brass case with fitted movement, Breguet-type key in a corner plate, key-lock in front, gimbals ring with locking swiveling arm, interior box labeled for Cornelius Knudsen, who overhauled the chronometer in July of 1945

Notes: Bliss & Creighton patented a double-sprung balance and a new compensation balance to reduce Middle tempurature error (patent No. 4,135). This design is found in the present example.


  • Condition: Overall good condition. Winds, sets and runs. Dial: Good condition. Light surface abrasion. Movement: Good condition. Case: Good condition. With scuffs and scratches to the wood case commensurate with age.
