  • Notes: Crystal Cove State Park, located just North of Laguna Beach, comprises over 3 miles of pristine beach backed by a virtually undeveloped woodland area located between Pacific Coast Highway and the Pacific Ocean. From the 1920s to the 1950s, this area was home to a vibrant art community and a seaside colony of cottages were built along the coast.Starting in the early 1900s, artists began visiting Crystal Cove to paint its scenic vistas. After Pacific Coast Highway opened in 1926, large numbers of day-trippers and vacationers arrived, tents sprouted up on the beach, and residential structures soon followed. Enjoying a colorful history, Crystal Cove served as a set for Hollywood filmmakers during the silent film boom, a drop-off spot for Prohibition-era rumrunners, a recreation destination for motorists during the early auto-touring movement, a staging ground for postwar tiki parties and luaus, and a continual source of inspiration for Laguna's art community.By the end of the '30s, the Irvine Company, which owned all the land in the area and leased acreage across the highway to farmers and ranchers, prohibited new building in the cove. The Irvine Company gave residents the option of moving their cottages or paying rent. The majority signed leases, allowing them to remain. In 1979, the state purchased the land from the Irvine Company and sent eviction notices to the cove's residents. After years of legal wrangling, the final residents moved out in 2001. Since that time there has been ongoing rehabilitation of some of the original cottages, a portion of which are available for use as vacation rentals from the California Parks and Recreation Department. In this southward looking view painted in 1960, Ben Abril documents Crystal Cove during its golden days as a sunny and carefree spot to enjoy an old-fashioned California vacation. Abril captures all of the elements of this picturesque and historical scene: the cottages, the coastal landscape, figures and umbrellas on the beach and the Pacific.
