    Other notes:
Influential American painter, muralist, and educator, Arthur Mathews is associated with the Tonalist movement and the broader Arts and Crafts aesthetic in California. Born in Markesan, Wisconsin, he studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco and later in Paris at the Académie Julian, where he absorbed European academic techniques. After returning to the United States, Mathews became a central figure in the development of a distinctly Californian artistic identity, blending classical influences and Craftsman's aesthetic with a sensitivity to the landscapes and light of the West Coast. His work, both figural and landscape, often feature serene, idealized scenes rendered in muted tones, emphasizing harmony, symbolism, and a spiritual connection to nature.

Beyond his painting, Mathews played a major role in shaping the California art scene through teaching and design. He served as director of the California School of Design and, along with his wife, Lucia Kleinhans Mathews, founded the influential furniture and decorative arts studio "Philopolis." Their work embodied Arts and Crafts principles, integrating fine art with everyday life.

Mathews and Lucia Kleinhans Mathews met at the California School of Design, while Arthur was Director and Lucia was a student. The couple married in 1894 and shared a deeply collaborative and influential partnership that shaped the development of the Arts and Crafts movement in California. Working closely across painting, design, and decorative arts, the couple blended their talents to create a unified artistic vision that emphasized beauty, craftsmanship, and harmony in everyday life. At their co-founded studio and workshop, "Philopolis," they produced furniture, textiles, and interior designs that reflected their shared ideals. Lucia contributed significantly through her skill in design and craftsmanship, while Arthur brought his experience as a painter and educator, making their relationship not only personal but also a creative alliance that left a lasting mark on California's artistic identity.

There are a few known examples of Mathews' work where Lucia was the central compositional subject like the present work, and Mathews also periodically used Lucia as a model in figural compositions, but these were not intended to be formal portraits. The present work likely relates to a circa 1899 oil on canvas in the Collection of the Oakland Museum of California titled "Lucia Reading (Portrait of Lucia K. Mathews in Pink Kimono)." In both paintings, the sitter wears a rose-colored Asian-style kimono and sits with her head bowed, reading a book. Lucia's hair is similarly coiffed in each composition, and the walls and ground are in analogous brown tones. The figure's position within the interior differs: in the Oakland painting Lucia sits in three quarter profile bathed in strong light, and in the present work she faces the viewer in a room without a direct light source. Mathews includes patterning in the present work that is not incorporated in the Oakland composition as well: a geometrically designed colorful underskirt is visible beneath the kimono, and what appears to be an abstract composition or perhaps stained-glass window is situated on the wall framing the figure's head.
  • Condition: Visual: Overall good appearance. A 3" vertical hairline crack in the panel in the upper right corner. Two pinpoint-sized abrasions with attendant pigment loss in the upper edge of the painting displayed behind the figure.

Blacklight: Small spots of touch-up scattered primarily throughout the background, concentrated in the upper half, with the largest being approximately 1" H x 2" W.

    Frame: 22.25" H x 19" W x 2.5" D
