- Provenance: Private collection, Santa Barbara, CA
- Notes: During the period in the 1920s and 30s when Hansen was painting the fishing industry on the Monterey Peninsula, many Portuguese and Italian fishermen used lampara nets for seining sardines. The lampara nets and the modern purse seines are the most important sea-fishing gear for pelagic fish schooling in large and dense shoals. When these nets are used, a shoal of fish is surrounded with a curtain or wall of netting that is buoyed at the surface and weighted at the bottom. The lampara nets were typically used for night fishing on smaller boats fitted with bright lights to attract either mackerel or sardines.
- Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Black Light: Recto: Heavy varnish. Verso: spots of touch-up scattered throughout the background.
