  • Notes:
Armin Hansen was an American artist renowned for his powerful depictions of the sea and the lives of fishermen along the California coast. Born in San Francisco, Hansen trained in Europe, where he absorbed influences from Impressionism and Expressionism, and even worked aboard fishing boats--experiences that deeply informed his art.

Settling in Monterey, Hansen became known for his dynamic portrayals of maritime labor. His paintings feature bold brushwork, dramatic light, and a deep empathy for the working men of the Pacific. He captured not just scenes, but the spirit of a rugged, ocean-bound life.

Though rooted in realism, Hansen's work embraced modernist elements, blending structure and expression to elevate everyday moments. He also played a key role in California's art scene, co-founding the Carmel Art Association and mentoring many younger artists, helping to establish the region as a major center for American art in the early 20th century. Although maritime subjects dominate the artist's work, Hansen periodically explored artistic nude subjects like the present reclining woman.
