  • Notes: Note: (Lots 1056 - 1066) Property From the collection of Lucille Mara de Vescovi (Countess Mara)Lucilla Mara de Vescovi was born in Rome in 1893.†Her mother was the Baroness Elizabeth de Gleria of Trieste and her father was a professor of natural history at the University of Rome. Lucille grew up studying†art, design and music.In 1923 Lucilla arrived in New York City in the hope she would realize her dream of becoming a professional singer. She established herself in the New York upper social circles. In 1926 she married former tennis superstar, author and textile industrialist Malcolm D. Whitman. The story goes that one morning, Lucilla disparaged her husbandís new tie and he challenged her to create something better, which she did. During the next six years she designed cravats and neckties for her husband and her society friends that were the rage of New York. In 1938, Lucilla opened the firm of Countess Mara, dedicated to exciting, high-end gentlemen's neckwear. Countess Maraís designs featured naturalistic and whimsical themes that showcased Lucillaís artistic talent and forward-thinking aesthetic sensibilities.
