An Elgin cutlass pistol
1837, CB Allen, Springfield, Massachusetts
Wood-gripped handle outfitted with combination pistol/cutlass
5.75" H x 16.5" W; 5.00" barrel

Notes: This unusual cap and ball pistol is one of many variations and manufactures of knife pistols made during and after 1837. The original blade was likely made by N.P. Ames. Originally the U.S. Navy (Marines), contracted to purchase Elgin Cutlass Pistols during the 1837-1845 era to fight piracy on the high seas.

  • Condition: Overall good condition commensurate with age. The pistol and blade have an older polish to steel. Mechanism functions properly. Wood stock appears to have been replaced with a quality retrofit within the last 25 years.
