Covered wagon in an Eastern Sierra landscape near Alabama Hills (outside Lone Pine, CA), signed and dated lower right: Alson Clark '28, oil on canvas, 38.5'' H x 51.25'' W, est: $50,000/70,000. Exhibited: California Commission Golden Gate International Exposition, n.d. Note: Alson Clark moved, reluctantly, to Pasadena in 1919 to convalesce from deafness in one ear caused by work dangling out of airplanes as a Naval photographer during WWI in France. Clark had spent years living in France and various East Coast locations and he initially viewed the move to California as necessary but not ideal. Nevertheless, California proved to re-inspire Clark on many levels. His hearing was restored, he was able to renew his friendship with Guy Rose, who had previously returned to Pasadena in 1914, and he was invigorated by the new and diverse California landscape. Clark extensively explored the region and made multiple trips to desert and mountain locations in a rebuilt Dodge truck, including the 1928 trip that produced the present work. The Alabama Hills were host to over 150 movie shoots beginning in the 1920s, and Lone Pine would have been a bustling Western town when Clark visited. This Western-oriented environment may have influenced the artist to include a covered wagon travelling across a scrubby desert floor juxtaposed against the soaring eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada range. This lot is accompanied by a copy of Deborah Solon's 2005 book, ''An American Impressionist: The Art and Life of Alson Skinner Clark''.
