Alexander Helwig Wyant

(1836-1892)

"Al Fresco in the Marsh"

Oil on canvas laid to linen
Signed lower right: A.H. Wyant; titled on a label affixed to the frame's backing board
20" H x 30" W

  • Provenance:
    Private estate, California
  • Exhibited:
Chestertown, MD, Brady Hart Gallery, October 6-Novermber 31, 2017
  • Condition: Visual: Overall generally good appearance. Slight grime and craquelure showing primarily in the sky. Stretcher bar creases showing slightly along all sides, primarily in raking light. Occasional frame abrasion and/or portions of the unpainted edges of the canvas are exposed in places along the extreme edges (not visible as framed). A narrow surface abrasion with attendant paint loss, possibly from a former framing nail, extending horizontally 0.5" from the center of the extreme right edge. Other lesser defects. As mentioned, the canvas is laid to linen.

Blacklight: Scattered lines, dots, and small areas of touch-up (generally quarter-sized or less) throughout the sky, some of which may be attendant with old repairs. There is a dime-sized touch-up, likely attendant with a skillful repair, in the fieldstone wall to the right of the central clump of trees. Possibly some other touch-ups scattered in the landscape, middle-ground left, and middle-ground right, although difficult to confirm.

    Frame: 30.5" H x 40.5" W x 2.25" D

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
