  • Notes: Arthur LeDuc trained at the ecole under Barye and Lenordez, and exhibited a large number of bronzes at the Salon. One of his monumental groups is displayed in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. In the Greek myth of the tunic of Nessus, Heracles pursues Nessus, who carrying off Heracles' wife Deianira across a river, and kills him with a poison arrow. While he is dying, Nessus tells Deianeira that his blood will ensure Heracles' fidelity to her forever. Later, when Heracles casts aside Deianeira in pursuit of a princess, Iole, she attempts to win him back by soaking a tunic in the blood and sending it off with her husband as he leaves for a gathering of heroes. Meanwhile she discovers the blood is poisonous as it fumes when exposed to sunlight, but not in time to save Heracles, who is burned to death wearing the tunic
  • Condition: The plinth alone: 29''H x 28''W x 16''D. Good condition overall. General light marks, scratches, rubbing and wear to surfaces commensurate with age. Heavier rubbing to extremities. A5''-long dent running along one side of bronze base.
