  • Provenance: Maria Domont Collection, West Hollywood, CA
  • Notes: Stan Lee (1922-2018), was an American comic book writer and famously known as one of the prominent faces of Marvel Comics. In 1962 and with the collaboration of the influential comic artist, Steve Ditko, "Spider-Man" was created. This partnership would spark the development of the "Marvel Method," which was the idea that the plot was created by the writer, but the art was left to the artist.

In addition, the idea of "Spider-Man" came to be when Lee was in search of a new character to create. When on Larry King's CNN show in 2000, Stan Lee said, "I saw a fly crawling on the wall, and I said, ‘Wow, suppose a person has the power to stick to a wall like an insect.' So I was often running and I thought, ‘What do I call him?' I tried Mosquito Man, but that didn't have any glamor. Insect Man, that was even worse. I went down the line and I got to Spider-Man. It sounded mysterious and dramatic, and lo a legend was born."

Today, "Spider-Man" is one of the most popular superheroes in the Marvel universe. Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) is seen as relatable, appealing, and witty. "Spider-Man" has been successful in various adaptations, including movies, television, gaming, etc. What started as an idea in 1962 by Lee and Ditko, "Spider-Man," will live on for generations to come.
