A Russian icon of Christ-Pantocrator

With underpainting on wood depicting Christ-Pantocrator under a repoussé and embossed silver with goldplated riza, and with applied high-relief halo; dated on a label affixed, verso: 1867
12.25" H x 10.5" W x 1.25" D

  • Provenance: Nenov Icon Gallery, West Hollywood, CA
  • Notes: This lot is sold together with a letter from Svetlana Nenov, an expert in fine Russian art, signed in ink and dated October 14, 1981. The letter contains background information about the piece in this lot.

Svetlana Nenov in the letter writes that "It is very clear to see, that the icon and the "riza" weren't done by the same master. The riza is richly decorated with different designs and ornaments, while the icon itself has none of the above."
  • Condition: Overall good condition with minor scuffs, scratches, tarnishing, and darkening to underpainting commensurate with age. The applied halo with scattered areas of bending. A pinhead-sized hole in the riza right of center. The underpainting with dust accumulation, delicate craquelure, and darkening. Lifting to edges of the riza from the wood.

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
