Circa 1850, Paris, the mounts signed ''BY'' to reverse (Louis-Auguste-Alfred Beurdeley, French 1808 - 1882), the dial signed for retailer ''Boudet / Paris'', the twin barrel movement impressed to back plate ''1582'', Brocot escapement with hammer and bell, a "Regulateur de Parquet" of gilt bronze-mounted amaranth, tulipwood, sycamore and parquetry, the cloud-form case surmounted by three putti with floral garlands, centered by a hinged circular door inset with beveled glass enclosing a white enamel dial with applied black Roman numeral hour markers and Arabic minute markers at five minute increments, with pierced gilt metal hands, above a square tapering bois satine-veneered pedestal edged with acanthus moldings and topped with an Apollo mask, the hinged glass-inset door faced with scrolling foliage centered by an urn and musical instruments, on paw feet, raised on a shaped rectangular plinth decorated to the facing apron with a floral garland, on toupie feet, 88'' H x 19'' W x 12'' D, est: $30,000/50,000. Louis-Auguste-Alfred Beurdeley, son of Jean Beurdeley (founder of the Parisian Beurdeley studio), produced some of the most renowned examples of metalwork and Louis XVI style furniture of the 19th century. The studio was known for adhering to the highest standards of quality; both in their original designs as well as their copies after other well-known makers, as with the present example. Beurdeley supplied furniture for the Garde Mueble Imperial and the wedding of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, as well as to members of other European royal families while under Louis-Auguste-Alfred's direction. His son, Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis Beurdeley, continued to work in this style until the close of the company in 1895.

  • Condition: Overall good condition. Works complete; with pendulum. Scattered areas of buckling to veneer. One leg of one cherub unsecured from case. Restorations to dial; minor chips to outside edges. Scattered rubbed wear to gilding commensurate with age; bronze has most likely been refinished. Losses to veneer at base; the largest a 4'' x .5'' strip near bottom edge. Scattered areas of verdigris localized primarily to legs and elements at lower section of case. A horizontal break and subsequent repair to apron. Moran's does not guarantee working condition of clocks.
