A hammered brass sculpture of a stylized female figure, Franz Hagenauer

84.5'' H

  • Notes: Established by Carl Hagenauer in 1898, first in Pressburg before moving three years later to Vienna, and operating until 1987, the Werkstatten Hagenauer became world-renowned for its wide range of forward-looking metalware. Manufacturing utilitarian and decorative objects as well as sculpture, Carl was an early proponent of Viennese Modernism and won multiple awards for his reliefs, figures, lamps and various utensils. Carl's son Franz (1906 - 1986) joined his father and older brother Karl at the firm in 1926, after studying sculpture under Franz Cizek and Anton Hanak and taking a class in ironwork and chased metalwork from Josef Hoffmann, which included studies in chased brass. Franz soon exerted substantial influence on the Hagenauer firm and on the worldwide art scene, as a sculptor and designer with considerable talent. Though he designed many types of items, it was in sculpture in particular that Franz found personal fulfillment, and in the 1950's and early 60's he designed only figures and heads, pursuing the realization of an artistic vision recalling Brancusi in their reductive forms and Modigliani and Picasso in their proportions. In the catalogue for a 1971 retrospective of the Werkstatten Hagenauer, Fritz Wotruba describes Franz's figural sculptures, and particularly a female nude torso, as masterful examples of craft as well as convincing works of art. The catalogue for the 2011 retrospective in Vienna describes his sculptures as ''figurative wonders which would find appreciation far beyond the borders of their country of origin... nothing of their charm has been lost to this day.''
