Prototype Hughes Airwest Stewardess Uniforms, ca. 1972
In the early 1970s, Howard Hughes's airline, Hughes Airwest, unveiled one of the most distinctive stewardess wardrobes in aviation history - designed by Mario Armond Zamparelli, longtime artistic director to Hughes. Described in the airline's own 'Sundancer" magazine as "revved up with a classic boldness in beautiful shapes streaming like light over the body," the prototypes capture the optimism and theatrical flair of Jet Age travel.

The layered ensembles centered on the vivid "Sundance Yellow" knit dress, paired with streamlined jackets and outerwear trimmed in "Universe Blue." Accessories ranged from narrow-brimmed hats to sweeping hooded capes, creating a futuristic silhouette intended to "catch every eye as she shimmers across the airline terminal." For different routes and climates, Zamparelli designed practical variations including an orange cotton service smock.

These rare prototypes embody the intersection of fashion, branding, and aeronautical design in Hughes's empire, a testament to Zamparelli's vision of the airline stewardess as both modern, professional, and stylish.
  • Condition: Each overall good condition with dust accumulation, storage creasing, and light wear commensurate with age and use. Scattered faint marks to smock. Blouse with scattered areas of color variation and light staining from wear to armholes and to side back seam.
