A French gilt bronze-mounted Brocatelle Violette du Jura marble jardiniere, Maison Millet

  • Provenance: Estate, Los Angeles, CA
  • Notes: Established in Paris in 1853 and remaining in operation until 1918, the Maison Millet firm specialized in bronze mounts for furniture, developing a reputation for very fine execution of their own designs. Starting with the Exposition Universelle of 1889 (where they won a gold medal), the firm began making luxury furniture and decorative objects featuring their bronze work, and by the 1890's were well known as an important producer. They were awarded numerous other prizes in Paris and London, including a Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Exposition, three diplomes d'honneur and four further gold medals. Sometime after 1900 they opened a second office in Nice, and in 1902 moved their Paris offices from 11 rue Jacques-Coeur to 23 Boulevard Beaumarchais.   • Condition: Damages to marble, including large cracks, scuffs, scrapes, chips and fissures, some extending entirely through the walls, including a large network of cracks at one end, continuing around to each side. Some cracks repaired, with infill. A 1'' x 1'' gauge to lower molded edge of one side, part of a larger area of damage. Bottom edge of same side with deep scrapes and a 3'' gauge- pieces not retained. Several other smaller chips along molded edges at top and bottom. The mounts in good condition with general rubbing and scratches commensurate with age and use. Some discoloration, dirt accumulation and polish residue overall. Several mounts have been removed to reveal the inscribed ''MB'' monogram and subsequently re-attached.
