A fine Washoe basket, Dat-So-La-Lee

6.5'' H x 8'' W x 7'' D

  • Provenance: #REF!
  • Notes: The Emporium Co. pamphlet which accompanies this lot was found together with this and the following lot, along with a handwritten note (a copy of which is included with lot) signed by a descendant of the original owner: ''These pamphlets came with the purchase of the Dat-So-La-Lee baskets that Grandma Wood made- in Carson City Nevada, at the Emporium Department Store. They are very important to keep with the baskets = most rare to have the baskets & the enclosed information. Margaret Hastings 5-6-2000 (I've finally put it all together.)'' This pamphlet was found in a vintage envelope inscribed with notes presumably by the original owner and / or descendants: ''Dat-So-La-Lee - The most famous Indian basket weaver who ever lived -'' and in a different hand: ''Anne ran across this in another unexpected place. FMW (?)'' and further ''Mother's Handwriting.'' and ''1 12 11''. Another handwritten note found in the basket states ''This is a very unusual & unique Datsolalee (sic) basket - as it was probably started by another basket maker - the first 23 coils are less refined than Datsolalee's - & you can see that when she continued it, her recognizable pattern begins - This was definitely identified as hers- by Dr. Rozaire - at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum in 1970- Margaret Hastings 11/5/90.'' Abe Cohen (1859 - 1934) and Amy Cohen (1861 - 1919) founded the Emporium in Carson City, NV, sometime around 1895. They met Dat-So-La-Lee sometime around 1895, and she agreed to sell her baskets exclusively through the Emporium, in exchange for goods, fuel, medical care and a house. This arrangement, which continued until her death, established her widespread fame. The Cohens recorded Dat-So-La-Lee's baskets in a ledger which is now in the Nevada State Museum in Carson City
