  • Provenance:
From the Estate of Dorothy Adler Routh
    Acquired by descent
  • Notes:
Dorothy Adler Routh was a devoted and passionate collector of Asian art, renowned in the 1970s and 1980s for assembling one of America's finest private collections of Chinese cloisonné enamel. Beginning in 1962, what began as casual browsing in antique shops evolved into a passion that fueled a collection of extraordinary scope and quality.

By the mid-1970s, the Routh collection had achieved national recognition. Pieces from the collection were regularly loaned to museums and other prestigious institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and museums throughout the country, where they educated and inspired countless visitors. True to her philanthropic nature, Mrs. Routh ensured that her collection would serve an educational purpose beyond her lifetime. She generously donated a significant portion of the collection to the Claremont Colleges, where it remains on permanent display in the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, continuing to enrich the academic and cultural life of the institution.

Following Mrs. Routh's passing in 1999, the remaining works from her collection were carefully preserved within the family, where they have been treasured for over two decades. John Moran Auctioneers is honored to present a selection of works from this celebrated collection.
  • Condition: The rim has a loss to the underside measuring about .0.75" W x 0.625" L with two associated hairline cracks, one measuring 3.75" and 1.5". The loss and the hairline cracks have signs of old restoration. Some wear, scratches and minor losses to the enamels. With shelf wear and scattered scuffs and scratches commensurate with age.

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
