A bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara

The Licchavi Revival-style figure depicted standing with his right hand in varadamurda, clad in a dhoti secured with a pendant sash, adorned with the sacred thread and various jewelry, the face flanked by foliate earrings, the hair pulled into a high chignon and secured with a tripartite tiara centered by a diminutive seated Buddha
7.375" H x 3" W x 2.125" D

  • Provenance: The Collection of Walter and Nesta Spink, Ann Arbor, MI, by 1992
  • Notes: This figure represents a revival of earlier Nepalese traditions, particularly that of the Licchavi period (approximately AD 400-750). Such works are characterized by the sensitive treatment of the fingers and facial features. The Licchavi prototypes for these works were prized throughout Tibet and Mongolia, and must have inspired artisans of the 17th and 18th century to create these new images.
  • Condition: Solid cast, the left hand may be a replacement, casting repairs to left ankle.

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
