  • Notes: Moran's is delighted to offer this important example of late 19th century design by two of the most important figures in the development of l'Art Nouveau, from the renowned Wolfers workshop. The company was founded by Louis Wolfers in 1852. Louis' three sons, including Philippe, joined the business and spread out across the Continent, establishing relationships with retailers in France, Austria, the Netherlands, and Germany, including Friedlander in Berlin. Many Wolfers pieces therefore bear German and other foreign assay and retailers' marks. In 1885 Philippe became a partner in the business, at which time the firm was renamed 'Louis Wolfers Pere et Fils'. Following Louis' death in 1892 the firm adopted the name 'Wolfers Freres' and Philippe became the firm's artistic director. He and Isidore de Rudder, head sculptor of the workshop, were influential exponents of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, inspired by natural forms and 'Japonisme'. In addition to silver, Philippe also produced many other types of objects that are still considered supreme examples of Art Nouveau design, particularly in jewelry and glassware. He also commissioned Victor Horta to design the company's Brussels headquarters in 1909. In the 1880's and 90's he and de Rudder produced silver designs in an interpretation of Rococo Revival style freed from mere historicism, a hybrid of the curved rocaille forms typical of the age of Louis XV and Japonisme motifs such as crested waves and swirling eddies. The present centerpiece is a superb example of this marriage of styles, and of the high standard of craftsmanship seen in the Wolfers workshop, and is considered a masterwork among the many design collaborations by Wolfers and Rudder. Part of their highly coveted 'Aux Marauders' line featuring putti playing, it exhibits an extraordinarily lively sense of movement and dramatic tension, while achieving a delicate equilibrium through skillful balancing of the complex irregular, asymmetrically placed forms
