  • Notes: Bamboo artist Kadota Niko (1907-1994) was born in Fukuyama, Hiroshima prefecture and active in Beppu, Oita prefecture. Niko studied with Iwao Kounsai (1901-1992; also from Beppu, and was officially recognized by the national government in 1969 as one of Japan's top artisans) and was later mentor to his nephew Monden Kogyoku (b. 1916) and Honda Syoryu (b. 1951), whose styles might be considered generally more sculptural, modern, and innovative. Niko worked in the traditional style of the Beppu region, to the highest technical level, and was well known for his imposing, highly intricate jar-shaped flower baskets, or as they are sometimes named: "Beppu Exquisite Quality Jar-shaped Art Basket." Later in his career, Kadota created more free-form, expressionistic baskets as well.

Kadota Niko's mastery of combining traditional regional folk traditions of bamboo craftsmanship with his highly adept technical skills elevate his work into the aesthetic realm of fine arts, illustrating that "the aesthetic and ideational links between 'high' and 'folk' art, his pieces conducing the wild energy of bamboo into forms only realizable through the highest levels of hand skill and aesthetic ambition."
