''The Wanderer in Southern Seas'', signed lower right: Duncan Gleason, titled on an artist's label affixed verso, oil on canvas, 20'' H x 24'' W, est: $10,000/15,000. Note: The Wanderer, a whaling bark, was built in the town of Mattapoisett, MA and launched on April 16, 1878. The ship measured 116' bow to stern, with a beam of over 27'. For over 20 years, The Wanderer sailed out of New Bedford on whaling trips, with her last voyage in the summer of 1924. On August 24, 1924, the ship was caught in a massive tropical storm that was so violent the vessel's anchor chain was severed. The following day, gale-force winds forced The Wanderer onto the rocks at Cuttyhunk, where it suffered a total loss. Moran's sold a related painting by Duncan Gleason titled "The Wanderer, Whaling Bark, lost off Cuttyhunk Island, August 1924'' on June 24, 2008 for $25,800.
