"Dream Object (Nearby in a car-seat a tech guy from work was asking about daydream drawings...)," 1997

Gouache on board
Signed and dated in pencil verso: Jim Shaw / 97

  • Provenance: Patrick Painter Gallery, Santa Monica, CA
    The Blake Byrne Collection
  • Notes: Shaw's versatile oeuvre includes drawings, sculptures, prints, and photographs that often blur traditional categorization. He derives influence from Pop Art, Neo-Expressionism and Surrealism while likewise dismantling traditional notions of high and low art through the incorporation of outsider influences. His aesthetic has been described as "an artistic flea market," as Shaw draws further inspiration from his vast collection of salvaged amateur art, comic books, posters, and pulp novels. At once political, comedic and alarming, Shaw's sensibilities can be perceived by the drawings on offer from the Byrne collection. The artist inserts text from his everyday life, alongside pop culture references and allusions to dreamscapes and his O-ism religion, all unified by his mastery of pencil on paper. When asked to describe how his fascination with the subconscious informs his artwork, Shaw explains: "I've figured out that the core of dream logic is that it's an occult way of telling you something by not just lecturing you directly, but by showing you in a satirical way or a symbolic way with things that are formally similar but not exactly the same."
  • Condition: Generally good condition. The board is loose, not mounted.
