  • Provenance: Wally Findlay Galleries, Beverly Hills, CA
  • Notes: Henri Maik, born on March 27, 1922, in Paris, was an artist known for his paradoxical and dreamlike paintings. He identified himself as a Primitive painter rather than a naïf painter. Maik's artworks portrayed familiar yet strange landscapes filled with vibrant colors, simple flowers, exotic trees, rare birds, and jungle creatures. His paintings created a sense of harmony and invited viewers to join the community of creatures depicted.

In addition to painting, Maik showcased his talents in various other artistic fields. He designed tapestries in collaboration with Aubusson, created limited-edition fine jewelry, and authored and illustrated popular children's books.

Maik's artistic career was preceded by his involvement in the French Navy during World War II, where he served as a medical corpsman and was later captured and imprisoned. After his release, he worked as a lumberman in Normandy until the Liberation of France. Upon returning to Paris, Maik pursued acting in theater and French films before turning to painting in 1956. His artistic breakthrough came in 1960 when he had his first solo exhibition in Paris.

Throughout his career, Maik held successful exhibitions in prestigious venues such as the Musée de l'Art Moderne in Paris and the Cité Internationale des Arts. He received critical acclaim for his work exhibited at various galleries and museums, including the Abbey of Salins-les-Bains and the Maison de la Culture d'Argenteuil. Maik's paintings were featured in renowned art salons, including the Salon d'Automne and the Salon de Bollène, and his artworks can be found in notable collections such as the National Museum of Budapest, the Center of Contemporary and Experimental Art in Israel, and the Musée d'Art Naif de l'Ile-de-France in Vicq.

Related artists include Jean Dufy, Marcel Dyf, Pal Fried, Andre Hambourg, Michel Henry, Jean Jamsen, Constantin Kluge, Charles Levier, Henri Rousseau, and Claude Venard.
