  • Notes: We are grateful to Susan Ehrens for her assistance in cataloguing this work.

"Historically, it is surprising that this would be one of the ten best-known images by Weston since it so obviously betrays what was in 1946 still thought by many to be the mandate of even artistic photography, to record Nature truthfully, or at least credibly. How could nature, with her random behavior, arrange a composition around a diamond in the center of the film?....Weston seems to have perceived Nature here as an architect, with an apparently orderly plan....Weston was also attracted to the random elements, like the delicate branches and twigs resembling strokes of zen calligraphy, showing that this same Nature was never static, but, in fact, could be depended upon to be mysterious and unpredictable." Amy Conger, 1992
  • Condition: Overall good condition. The mount is affixed to the back mat with four paper archival corners.
