23'' H x 36'' W

  • Provenance: Private Collection, San Fernando, CA
  • Notes: The present work depicts the March 9, 1862 naval engagement between the Northern-built and Confederate-salvaged conventional steam frigate 'Merrimack' (which the Confederates rechristened 'Virginia') and the Union ironclad 'Monitor'. Also referred to as the Battle of Hampton Roads, the conflict occured in the harbor at the mouth of the James River at Hampton Roads, Virginia, and is historically significant because it was the first duel between two ironclad warships, and ushered in a new era of naval warfare. Although the battle ended indecisively, it is credited with spurring important new technological developments in naval warfare worldwide. The major naval powers of Great Britain and France immediately halted orders for wooden-hulled ships and the types of guns used on battleships were also modified to mimic the 'Monitor's' arrangement of a small number of heavy guns mounted so they could fire in all directions
  • Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Frame abrasion with some scattered losses. Blacklight: Scattered minor spots of touch-up in the sky in the upper left. A few scattered spots of touch-up in the lower left corner. A spot of touch-up along the right center edge.
