Provenance: The Estate of Georgia Hollinger Clark.

Notes: The early Victorian era in Britain coincided with the first Industrial Revolution which, as it reached its peak, created a longing for the idealized bucolic life. The resulting Romantic movement emphasized an idealization for the distant past and nature, striking a chord in all manners of art. Once Queen Victoria acquired Balmoral, the royal family's Scottish retreat, in 1848 it set off a trend for all things Scottish. Coupled with the Romantic movement this laid the groundwork for the craze of Scottish pebble jewelry that reached its zenith in the 1860s and 1870s. In this auction, Moran's presents a collection of the typically Scottish forms of garter belt bracelets, a dirk kilt pin, and plaid pins from the collection for Georgia Hollinger Clark. The pieces are variously set with foggy grey agate, deep green and red bloodstone, warm carnelian, thistle-colored amethyst, and brooding jasper within silver mounts designed to complement the lacy swirls of the agate.

  • Condition: Overall good condition with tarnishing to silver and scattered fleabites and nicks to stones commensurate with age and wear. The pinback and hinge are missing.
