American portrait of a girl, circa 1883, oil

14.25'' H x 10.5'' W

  • Provenance: Property from a Pasadena, CA Estate
  • Notes: According to the consignor's family, the present work may depict Miss Sarah Joy ''Daisy'' Merrill (Mrs. Charles H. Grierson) of New Bedford, MA and may have been painted by her grandfather, Captain Edward Merrill. Captain Merrill (1800-1884 New Bedford, MA) was a whaling sea captain and eventually settled in New Bedford, MA. There he manufactured whale oil and candles and built a large stone wharf called Merrill's Wharf. He painted as a hobby and was active in the same community as William Bradford (1823-1892) and R. Swain Gifford (1840-1905). ''The girl in the portrait appears to be about 15 which, if she is Daisy Merrill, means that the painting was done circa 1883. The Chinese umbrella stand shown in the painting was a part of the Alice Grierson Estate [daughter of Daisy Merrill] properties although badly damaged. It and other Oriental pieces were acquired by Captain Merrill during his voyages to the Orient.'' (quoted from a signed statement from William Paul Blair, dated September 28, 1989). See further typed correspondence between Mr. William Paul Blair and Old Dartmouth Historical Society, New Bedford, MA, 1989-1990 affixed to the present work
