Path in a eucalyptus tree landscape, signed lower right: Alson Clark, oil on canvas, 30'' H x 38'' W, est: $30,000/50,000. Note: In Deborah Solon's 2005 book ''An American Impressionist: The Art and Life of Alson Skinner Clark'', Solon establishes that it is limiting to characterize Alson Clark only as an Impressionist, specifically a regional California Impressionist, when an analysis of his complete oeuvre shows that the artist chose a variety of ''artistic strategies that best suited the scene or subject'' (D. Solon, p. 12). Nevertheless, the Impressionistic tenet of working ''en plein air'' was a lifelong consideration of Clark's as he sought to ''experience [and capture] the true, natural, direct light of nature'' in his landscapes (J. Stern, ''Alson Skinner Clark'', Los Angeles, CA, 1983, p. 95). The present work captures this plein air style as luminous, pure California light fills this verdant eucalyptus landscape. Clark's use of the archetypal compositional device of a path cutting through the scene effectively guides the viewer into the idyllic countryside as sparkles of sunlight highlight the tips of the eucalyptus branches above. This lot is accompanied by a copy of Deborah Solon's 2005 book ''An American Impressionist: The Art and Life of Alson Skinner Clark''.
