Alexander F. Harmer (1856-1925 Santa Barbara, CA)

watercolor and gouache on paper under glass
sight size: 19.75'' H x 28.75'' W

  • Provenance: A.C. Postel, founder of Santa Barbara law firm Price, Postel and Parma, acquired directly from the artist, circa 1905, by descent in the family three generations; Arlington Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA; The Estate of Ernest A. Bryant III, Santa Barbara, CA, acquired from the above, June 1989
  • Exhibited: The Valley Club of Montecito, Santa Barbara, CA, September - December 2002
  • Notes: Harmer's work is at once romantic and historical with a focus on capturing the vanishing life in and around the old missions during the Mexican Rule period. The present work is a strong example of this style and has great attention to detail and a dynamic composition. As with many of the artist's works, Harmer used his wife and other family members as models for the figures in this scene. Marcos Ranch extends far northward into the San Rafael backcountry and once contained over 35,000 acres purchased from Governor Pico on June 8, 1846 by Don Nicholas Den of Ranchos Dos Pueblos and his physician brother Richard. The ranch still exists today with a portion of the property renamed Rancho San Fernando Rey. The ranch was once the site of the 'Assestencia de Santa Cruz' that was one of the Royal 'kitchen' ranches operated by the Santa Barbara Mission beginning in 1804
  • Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Minor toning to the paper. Not examined out of the frame.
