A pair of Louis XIV ormolu-mounted brass, pewter and tortoiseshell 'Boulle' marquetry-inlaid ebonized gueridons / torchieres

61'' H x 22'''' Dia.

  • Provenance: Property from a Private Pasadena, CA Collector; the Collection of Mrs. Jean Carnegie Cook, acquired through Valerian Rybar & Daigre, Inc. from Didier Aaron, Paris, France, 1980
  • Notes: A number of design characteristics of this pair of torchieres can be found in drawings executed by Andre Charles Boulle and reproduced in his ''Nouveaux Dessins de Meubles et Ouvrages de Bronze et de Marqueterie Inventes et Graves par Andre Charles Boulle'', published by Mariette after 1707. The faceted stem and tripartite supports with graduated inverted C-scroll supports and in-scrolled acanthus is shown in his torchiere design on Plate 4. Similar forms to the distinctive open-mouthed satyr mask corner mounts were used on designs for a side table (Plate 5)
  • Condition: Structurally sound. With typical marks, nicks, scratches and rubbed wear commensurate with age and use. With areas of loss, replacement and over painted restoration to tortoiseshell marquetry. Some areas better matched than others. Tops apparently now affixed to stems. With variations to quality of mounts. Most very well cast, gilt and chased. Central sections beneath stem apertures possibly formerly blue-stained horn. Most brass and much of pewter inlay appears intact- probably with some replacements that are well matched. Probably with some re-engraving to brass marquetry. Bases detach from end of standard- originally secured with threaded wooden dowels, now replaced with metal threading. Repairs to legs and feet. Some legs with later braces to undersides. Possibly formerly with further ball feet as there are open and plugged holes to undersides of legs. AS-IS. ALL SALES FINAL.
