  • Provenance: Property from an important La Cañada Flintridge estate
  • Notes: California artists Venetia Epler (1912-2005) and Daphne Huntington (1910-2012) were inseparable sisters and accomplished artists, initially specializing in stained glass and ceramics, while also experimenting with many different art forms.

Venetia and Daphne studied together in London at the Slade School of Fine Art and London School of Fine Arts, and also at the École de Louvre in Paris. Back in California, the sisters continued their art studies with several well-known California artists, including Percy Gray (1869-1952) and Sam Hyde Harris (1889-1977).

While creating stained glass windows for churches in Compton, England, and later in Beverly Hills and East Los Angeles, they also designed their much-heralded California "Aztec" line of ceramic ware, which won them a Gold Award from The National Ceramic magazine. Their ceramics business was to be short lived, however, as the city of Los Angeles had banned the use of kilns on residential property.

Painting thus became their artistic outlet and passion-they indulged in many styles, techniques, and subjects, including cowboys, scenes of Native Americans, landscape, still life, spiritual subjects, and portraiture. One of Venetia's preeminent portraits was one of President Dwight Eisenhower in 1970, commissioned by President Richard Nixon to hang the White House and which is now in the Richard Nixon Library Collection.

As well as their fine paintings, the multi-talented sisters designed public murals, wrote poetry, illustrated books, and later began working for Hollywood studios, including Hanna-Barbera and Warner Brothers, creating background animation artwork for popular early children's TV programs.
  • Condition: Each overall fair to good condition with wear, scattered minor scuffs, and inherent firing flaws and glaze imperfections commensurate with age and use. Most pieces with scattered chips, hairlines, and repaired breaks, including to teapot spout, lid, and one large plate with prominent repaired break.
