two standing Chinese figures s & dated l/r: Bertha Lum '31 raised line color "print" with applied w/c gouache under glass

image size: 34.5 x 18.5

  • Provenance: private collection, San Francisco, CA
  • Notes: "Her experiments led to a process that she called "raised line" prints, the outlines of the design were raised a millimeter or more from the paper. The outlines also varied in width. The lines of this key-block defined areas that could easily be filled with watercolor. She did not document her technical procedures and preferred that they remain a mystery. There have been conjectures over the years that the raised line was perhaps created with wire or composed of gesso or lacquer. Actually, the line is hollow and created during the printing process......" BERTHA LUM Mary Evans O'Keefe Gravalos and Carol Pulin Smithsonian Institution Press 1991 pg 24
