Lot# 1054 An Austro-Hungarian enameled, parcel-gilt silver and stone-inset chess set


Late 19th / early 20th Century, probably Vienna, the square hinged game board lifting to reveal a crimson velvet-lined divided interior containing thirty-two amethyst glass and pearl-inset game pieces modeled as Medieval figures enameled in cobalt and pale blue, over sloped sides chased with acanthus scrolls and applied with enameled plaques depicting battle scenes and military trophies, with knights mounted to corners flanked by scrolling jewel-inset foliate sprays over similar pierced feet, the board, 6'' H x 22.5'' W x 22.5'' D, est: $8000/12,000

Note: A nearly identical set sold Doyle, New York, Belle Epoque, September 23, 2009, lot 209 ($28,125). Provenance: Property from a Private Collection, Fontana, CA. Condition: The pieces: largest - 3.75''; smallest - 3''. Typical marks, scratches, rubbing, oxidizing, tarnishing and wear commensurate with age and use. Some posts to gallery reattached. Military plaques to board with some inherent fine cracking and brown discoloration. With typical chipped and rubbed losses to enamel on some game pieces- more to figures mounted to corners of board. Two sabers from pieces off and retained. Some jeweled elements off and missing, some off and retained. Bending to feet. Rubbing to timber of lower cushion molding. Interior chain detached. Light wear to interior lining. AS-IS. ALL SALES FINAL.
