Emile Albert Gruppe

1896-1978

Artist Emile Gruppe was an American plein air landscape and seascape painter of oils on canvas. He founded the Gloucester School of Painting from his home base in Massachusetts, where he painted some of his most enduring scenes of boats and harbors. Emile Albert Gruppe’s paintings also include wintry scenes in Vermont and farmlands around the Woodstock, New York area.

Artist Emile Gruppe adopted a Post-Impressionist style, with expressive, edged brushstrokes that lend a touch of realism to his work. His compositions emphasized color and value, even with monochromatic winter scenes. Much of Emile Gruppe’s artwork for sale includes vibrant pastels and ochers, in particular, to highlight structural elements in his foregrounds.
