A pair of gilt bronze & alabaster standards, mid 19th century, one signed and dated ''Gaston de Pontalba 1854'', the other signed and dated ''Gaston de Pontalba 1855'', each tapering cylindrical standard surmounted by a foliate socket encircled by a grapevine, on a tripartite base of baby Tritons astride tortoises, their raised arms supporting a floral garland, alternating with armorial shields, now mounted as lamps, electrified, with shades, 2 pcs, each (excluding electrical fittings) 24'' H x 11'' Dia., est: $5000/8000
*Price Realized: $6,600.00

Note: Gaston Celestin Delfau de Pontalba (1821 - 1875) was the son of French aristocrat Baron Celestin de Pontalba and New Orleans heiress Baroness Micaela Almonester de Pontalba, who built and oversaw the design of the Pontalba Buildings in that city, as well as the Hotel Pontalba in Paris, which now serves as the American embassy residence. A gifted painter, carver and draughtsman, Gaston is well known for his drawings of St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, which was rebuilt in 1849 by his maternal grandfather. He produced only a small number of decorations, but known examples testify to his skill as a sculptor. Provenance: Property of an Estate, Montecito, CA. Condition: Each with general marks and rubbing to gilt surfaces commensurate with age and use. Each with abrasions and chipped losses to alabaster, the largest loss 3'' x 1''. Wiring should be checked by a qualified electrician prior to use. Diameter of shades: 18''.
