Paul de Longpré (1855-1911), “Birds and insects with a garland of flowers” $20,000-30,000

A California and American Fine art sale would not be complete without works by Edgar Payne. Leading the sale is “Chioggia Harbor,” estimated at $30,000-50,000. American painter Edgar Alwin Payne (1882-1941) had an illustrious career as one of the United States’ preeminent Impressionist painters. From his home base in southern California, Payne ventured out into the California mountains, painting striking scenes of the peaks and valleys of the Sierra Nevada. Drawn to Europe, Payne trekked to and painted the elevated heights of the Swiss Alps, the colorful fishing boats of Concarneau Harbor and Brittany, France and the picturesque sailing vessels of Chioggia, Venice, Italy, as seen in “Chioggia Harbor”. The sale also includes a fine selection of California landscapes and European boat scenes by this California Plein Air master.

For collectors of florals, “Birds and insects with a garland of flowers” by the French painter Paul de Longpré will be offered with a $20,000-30,000 estimate. De Longpré (1855-1911) was a French painter of flowers, who worked mainly in the United States. He was known for exquisitely detailed floral paintings that united artistry with scientific expertise. In the 1900s de Longpré found inspiration in the 4,000 rose bushes he planted on his Hollywood estate.

Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1951),

Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1951), "Lucky Bag Girl" $15,000-20,000

The sale includes an impressive selection of California Modernism including works by Millard Sheets. Sheets (1907-1989) was the Dean of California watercolorists. Born in Pomona, California, Sheets became an award-winning painter at an early age, then studied at the prestigious Chouinard Art institute from 1925-1929. During the 1930s, Sheets was invited to exhibit at almost every major American Museum, and in many ways, his work came to represent the California Watercolor school. His works are in the permanent collection of dozens of public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Offered in this sale are two works by Sheets, “Mendocino,” 1983, estimated $8,000-12,000 and “Sonoma Coast with Pintos,” 1981, valued at $6,000-8,000.

In the category of Exploration Art are Artic and Alaskan works by William Bradford and Sydney Mortimer Laurence. Bradford (1823-1892) was an American Romanticist painter, photographer, and explorer known for his paintings of ships and Arctic seascapes. He was one of the first American artists to portray the frozen regions of the north. His work, “Morning’s Silver Light (Coast of Labrador),” 1877, will make its way to the block with a $20,000-40,000 estimate. Sydney Mortimer Laurence (1865-1940), one of Alaska’s most prominent and celebrated art practitioners, was the first professionally trained artist to make Alaska his home. Laurence painted many views of the incomparable Denali peak, of which “Denali landscape” is an excellent example, estimated at $20,000-30,000.

Frederick Mulhaupt, Joseph Christian Leyendecker, and William Slaughter highlight the American art selections. Mulhaupt (1871-1938) was born in the small town of Kiowa, Kansas but the majority of his professional career was spent in New York, Boston, and East Gloucester, MA, where he eventually settled. Mulhaupt’s “Fall landscape” is a purely Impressionistic view, with each stroke juxtaposing the next color and hue. The 36” H x 36” W canvas is offered at an estimate of $20,000-30,000. One of the titans of American illustration is Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1951). His exquisite paintings, constructed from vivid colors and quick, broad strokes, captured the energy and excitement of the early 20th century, as seen in “Lucky Bad Girl,” circa 1910, valued at $15,000-20,000. William Slaughter (1923-2003) was a Texas minister-turned-artist. Predominantly self-taught, Slaughter’s innate ability enabled him to create a body of realist Texas-focused work including landscapes, figural works, still life, and wildlife. “Bluebonnet Landscape” will be presented in this sale with a value of $8,000-12,000.

Other notable works include Redmond Stephens Wright’s “Wrestling Match”, estimated $1,800-2,000, and Tarmo Pasto’s “Three Sentinels,” 1971, with a $1,000-2,000 estimate.
