Los Angeles, CA— CA — On October 15th, 2024, at 10:00am PDT, John Moran Auctioneers will be presenting their fall edition of ReDesigned. Featuring more than 300 lots, the offerings in this sale include a fine collection of art glass, multiples, oil paintings, sculptures, and furniture. Highlighted artists Nathan Oliveira, Billy Al Bengston, Robert Graham, Eric Isenburger, and Robert Cottingham will make their way to the block. Esteemed designers like Hans Wegner, Irving Harper and George Nelson, Ray and Charles Eames, Maurice Barilone, Arne Jacobsen, and Jim Drain are featured. Rounding out this must-see auction is a Gibson ES-350 electric guitar, and a 1974 Emmy award for Film Editor of the Year. 

Lot 94: Robert Cottingham (b. 1935) "Roxy" $2,000-3,000

Leading the sale is a bronze sculpture by the American painter, printmaker, and sculptor, Nathan Oliveira. Oliveira (1928-2010) was born in Oakland, California to immigrant Portuguese parents. Since the late 1950s, Oliveira has been the subject of nearly one hundred solo exhibitions, in addition to having been included in hundreds of group exhibitions in important museums and galleries worldwide. For several decades, he taught studio art in California, starting at California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts) in Oakland, then serving as a Visiting Artist at several universities. Oliveira became a Professor of Studio Art at Stanford University. Lot 146 will present “Head Two,” 1982, with an estimate of $15,000-25,000.

Another featured sculptor in the sale is Robert Graham. Four Aqua-Resin plaques, “Untitled nudes”, is lot 162, estimated $3,000-5,000. Graham (1938-2008), a Mexican-born American sculptor, is known for his monumental bronzes commemorating the human figure that can be found scattered across the U.S.

Other noteworthy fine art comes from Billy Al Bengston, Eric Isenburger, and Robert Cottingham. Lot 111, Bengston’s work titled, “Puerto Escondido,” 1977, estimated $3,000-5,000, has a provenance from Artist Studio in Venice, CA and James Corcoran Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Bengston (1934-2022) was an American visual artist and sculptor who ARTnews referred to as a “giant of Los Angeles’s postwar art scene.” Lot 20, “Zinnias in Blue Water Can,” 1970, estimated $3,000-5,000 comes from the German artist, Eric Isenburger. After trying out the art scene in Berlin and garnering a great response from the public, Isenburger’s (1902-1994) success came to a halt once the Nazis took power. In 1941, he was able to escape to America and became a multi-award-winning artist, showing work in several museums and galleries in the U.S. until the end of the 1950s. Estimated $2,000-3,000, “Roxy,” 2002, is lot 94, a lithograph by the American artist, Robert Cottingham. Cottingham (b. 1935) is known for his paintings and prints of urban American landscapes showing building facades, neon signs, movie marquees, railroad heralds, and shop fronts.

Along with the art, collectors are sure to take notice of the fun and funky furniture! Lot 274 will present a highly coveted “Papa Bear” chair with matching ottoman by Hans Wegner, estimated $7,000-9,000. Irving Harper and George Nelson’s mid-1950s “Marshmallow Sofa” for Herman Miller, lot 2, has a value of $3,000-5,000. This sale will also include an Eames chair, lot 272, estimated $2,000-4,000 and an eye-catching fuchsia goatskin leather chair by Jim Drain, lot 185, with a $500-700 estimate.

Rounding out the sale, a nice collection of rugs, some unique large metal animal sculptures, and a few electric guitars including lot 99, a Gibson ES-350 electric guitar, estimated $4,000-6,000.
