Los Angeles, CA— On Tuesday, June 11th, 2024, John Moran Auctioneers presented their bi-annual sale of Modern & Contemporary Art. This auction featured works by many important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries such as Raimonds Staprans, George E. Hughes, Pablo Picasso, Masami Teraoka, Norman Rockwell, Jacques Lipchitz, Alec Monopoly, Marc Chagall, Joe Basso, Senaka Senanayake, Hunt Slonem, Ruth Armer, Peter Alexander, Henrietta Berk, Linda McCartney, and Joan Miro.

Lot 86: George E. Hughes (1907-1990), "Don't Block The Driveway" $53,975

Interested bidders and watchers were sure to tune in for lots 34 and 35, two bright orange new-to-market works by Raimonds Staprans. Lot 34, “Blue Skies, Red Paint,” 1994, achieved a great result bringing in $203,200*. Then, “A Can And Orange,” 1996, lot 35, exceeded it’s high estimate of $40,000 with the winning bidder taking it for $57,150*.

Another favorite was a study for “The Land of Enchantment”, circa 1934, by Norman Rockwell. Currently in the collection of the New Rochelle Library, New Rochelle, it originally appeared as a double-page spread in the December 22, 1934, edition of The Saturday Evening Post. Doubling its estimate, lot 84 sold for a whopping $63,500*.

Lot 14: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), “Jacqueline Au Chevalet” $25,080

Along with Norman Rockwell, another well-known Saturday Evening Post artist featured in this sale was George E. Hughes. Lot 86, “Don’t Block The Driveway,” 1953, brought in an exciting final bid of $53,975* and lot 85, “Gossiping Neighbor,” 1951, achieved $50,800*.

There were multiple works offered by the legendary Pablo Picasso. Highlighting this selection was his 1905 ink and paper work, “The Acrobats.” Lot 15 more than tripled its high estimate, selling for $52,800*. Lot 14 presented an example of Picasso’s ceramic pieces titled, “Jacqueline Au Chevalet,” 1956, and earned a price realized of $25,080*.

Other noteworthy lots of the sale were works by Ruth Armer and Rene Gruau. Selling for $31,750* was lot 67, “Surreal Landscape” by Ruth Armer. Then, lot 99, Rene Gruau’s “Le Masque Indiscret,” 1976, hammered in $15,240*, tripling its high estimate.
